Every Unix-based operating system has a terminal; it is the way in which the user gives the system commands. It is usually stored in the Applications directory. For windows users, a third party program is required, get Putty, you won’t be able to modify directories and files on your own system, but you will be able to access servers through secure shell (SSH). When you open the terminal, you will be presented with ‘%,’ the command prompt. It is usually a percent sign, but because my MacBook Pro was stolen, I’ll be using Putty on my PC and accessing RIT’s server for this. In this case, the command prompt is the server name followed by my username in braces, followed by the line number, followed by a colon.
