Forces in words

1. What is a force?

2. List as many examples of types of forces (names of forces) as you can think of.

3. Divide the forces on your list above into two types of forces: contact forces or non-contact forces

4. In the diagram below, Chris is pushing on the very large box shown, and Pam is pulling on a rope attached to the box. The box does not move.
(a) Draw a “free-body diagram.” Draw vectors representing the forces on the box with all the the tails of the vectors near the center of the box in the diagram below:

 

                   


(b) Write the symbol you chose to label each vector on the left below, then say, in words, in a sentence, what object exerts the force, what object the force is exerted on, and the direction of the force: e.g., “object name pushes in direction on other object name.”
