Test 3 info

Test 3, Wednesday, 4 May 04, during lecture. Our tests will be WHITE.

Chapters 18, 34, 35, 36-37 from the text.

The topic is WAVES:

From WebAssign: you should review [PS 4 (#3-6 on waves)], PS5, PS6, PS7 and PS8 [#1 only] and pre-class assignments, A4.2 - 8.1.

From class:

     • the general rules for superposition of waves: phasors, constructive and destructive interference, standing waves, beats.
     • how each of these types of superpositions applies to waves on a string, to sound waves, to light waves.
     • resonance
     • what the Fourier transform tells us about a wave.
     • Doppler effect.
     • 1, 2, N slits; grating: patterns that you see and how they change when slit width, separation, number, wavelength changes.
     • polarization (see sample test and Web PS8 #1.

Sample test (pdf) -- solutions coming     p1    p2   p3   p4   (jpgs). Note: this test was given during a quarter in which we did not talk about lenses at all. Be certain to look at the "Lenses lab" for what might be on the test.
