Andres Carrano joined the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in 2000. His teaching interests are in the area of manufacturing, inventory systems, warehousing and material handling. His current research interests are in surface metrology and materials substitution in sustainable product design. His work has been funded primarily by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Toyota Foundation USA, the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Andres is the founding Director of the Toyota Production Systems Lab, and the current Vice-President of the College-Industry Council on Material Handling Education (MHIA-CICMHE), He is a senior member of both SME and IIE, a regular member of ASEE and co-advises the Engineers for a Sustainable World ESW student chapter at RIT.
Andres has lived in several countries and has held faculty appointments at universities in Japan, Turkey, USA and Venezuela. He is the recipient of the IIE Curriculum Innovations Award (2009), the IIE Excellence in Teaching of Lean Concepts Award (2010) and the EPA P3 Award (2005).
