FOCUS ON FORBES

Roland (Chip) Stevens, great-grandson of Dr. Charles Forbes, of Forbes Dry Plates, will speak on Thursday, May 18. Doctor Forbes had many patents on photographic equipment such as a photomicroscope to photograph insects. He graduated from the University of Rochester and taught there as well as at Mechanics Institute (now Rochester Institute of Technology), teaching optics, physics and astronomy. The family history relates that he worked with George Eastman on photography, and his process was claimed by Eastman.

In doing research Mr. Stevens discovered some 5"x 8" glass plates with stereo collodion images of Mount Hope Cemetery. He will share these images with our group.

The time is 7:30pm at Barnes & Noble at 3349 Monroe Ave. in Pittsford Plaza, east of Wegmans (in the former B. Forman department store).

Recap March Graflex Meeting

Unfortunately, Tim Holden was unable to attend our March meeting, but members brought many Graflex cameras. We talked about them chronologically. Thanks to Jack Bloemendaal, Nick Graver, and Jeff Schwartz, who brought several examples. Jack also brought some literature and the Combat Graphic. Thanks also to Grace Holloway, who provided great refreshments, as usual.

Recap April Dinner Meeting Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Four of the 15 charter members of TPHS were among the 31 attendees at our dinner meeting in April: Jack Bloemendaal, Rolf Fricke, Frank Mehlenbacher and Martin Scott.
Frank Mehlenbacher showed slides of his amazing collection. As he is the grandson of Frank A. Brownell, who made cameras for George Eastman, he had fascinating stories about their business dealings. The letters signed by Eastman are in his collection, as well as figurines, hundreds of cameras, advertising pieces, pins, ephemera, and literature.

Jack told a little of the history of the group, which is the oldest such group in the world! The first meeting of the Antique Photographic Society of Rochester was held in January, 1966 at the home of Willis Stockdale; the February meeting at the home of Jack Bloemendaal; March, GEH; April, Martin Scott; and May, Frank Mehlenbacher.

The charter members were Jack Bloemendaal, Larry Forward, Robert A. Fox, Rolf D. Fricke, Bill Fujimura (deceased), Bruce L. Kelly, Rudolf Kingslake (deceased), Eaton S. Lothrop Jr., Frank B. Mehlenbacher, Victor A. Moyes (then director of the Patent Dept. Museum at Kodak, deceased), Beaumont Newhall (then director of GEH, deceased) , A. C. Robertson (deceased), Hubert B. Sapp, Martin L. Scott and Willis L. Stockdale.

The name was changed to The Photographic Historical Society in June, 1968.
Some TPHS members brought early photographs and meeting notices for the first 24 years to display for our 40th anniversary.
