CNC Router
While I considered the design
for several months prior,
I designed, fabricated and tuned this machine in only six weeks during
the
summer of 2009. I have always been interested in robotics and controls,
and I
like to choose projects that can spawn additional ones! While I
certainly drew
inspiration from the many CNC router plans available online, I chose to
design
my own machine, from the ground up to meet my own unique
specifications.
Designed
entirely in Autodesk Inventor, it is capable of routing materials as
hard as
aluminum, with .001” repeatability inside a 22”x11”x4” cutting
envelope. Built
for ~$400, including all mechanical, stepper and controller components,
this
project challenged me to design around a demanding set of constraints
in a
short period of time, while remaining inside a small budget. Above it,
it
presented an excellent opportunity to learn more about CAM and
automation.
