Structure of American
Sign Language 0835-721 4 Credits
This course concentrates
on the linguistic structures of American Sign Language (ASL). Students examine
all levels of structure from phonology (sublexical) through morphology and
syntax to semantics and discourse. ASL structures will be elucidated through
comparison and contrast with English and other spoken languages or dialects,
as well as with other sign languages. ASL literacy, language variation and
code switching in the deaf population are also examined. (FQ, SuQ).
Dynamic Diagnostic 0835-398 4 Credits
Dynamic Diagnostic is an ASL course taught in a Bilingual environment,
by a hearing and Deaf team of ASL educators to MSSE students in Deaf Education.
It is a "dynamic diagnostic" of the students' ability to interact
successfully using ASL. Students developing conversational and presentational
fluency in ASL accomplished by practicing the telling of a specified story.
Class learning occurs in three areas: a) improved sign skills in presenting
the intended message in a clearly detailed story, b) metalinguistic knowledge
of ASL and English, and c) application of ASL grammar information and skill
to simulated mini-lessons in various subject areas.
