Field Experiences

100 hours prior to student teaching:
The MST program requires that students complete at least 100 hours of field experience prior to student teaching. The field experiences are focused on art education classrooms in a variety of settings.

Most of the field experiences occur in the greater Rochester area. A focus on a range of grade levels and schools is required. An emphasis is place upon field experiences in high-need schools. Students observe, participate and conduct research during these experiences.

Student Teaching Experiences:
The MST program requires two supervised student teaching experiences out of the following:

  • one at the high school level (7-12)
  • one at the middle school level (6-8)
  • one at the elementary school level (K-6)

The first student teaching placement is 6-7 weeks and the second is 6-7 weeks. Each student is assigned a college supervisor and a cooperating teacher for each setting. College Supervisory visits take place on site, 4 to 6 times over the total student teaching experience, with a minimum of two visits per setting. Weekly contact and meetings with the supervisor take place and communication between the cooperating teacher and supervisor takes place on a regular basis. Students use reflective practice to record and analyze their teaching experiences.

Use of the State and National Standards (http://www.ed.gov/pubs/ArtsStandards.html) (http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/ciai/arts.html) are required and fostered. Feedback is given to the student throughout. Evaluations are conducted throughout the two experiences.
