Abacuses

@Cranmer Abacus

This is a 13-rod abacus similar to a Japanese soroban. Its frame measures 6 1/8 x 3 1/4 inches and is made of high-impact plastic. The bead diameter is approximately 3/8 inch. Beads are formed of rigid, polyvinyl plastic. A felt backing prevents beads from slipping. An optional cadmium-plated steel coupler is available for linking two abacuses together. Recommended ages: 8 years and older.

Cranmer Abacus: Catalog no. 1-03150-00--$14.95 Coupler for Cranmer Abacus only: Catalog no. 1-03160-00--$4.95

@Large Abacus

This large version of the Cranmer Abacus is designed for use by young students and those who lack fine motor skills. The frame measures 8 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches and the bead diameter is approximately 1/2 inch. Both the frame and beads are made of high-impact plastic. A felt backing prevents the beads from slipping.

@APH Number Line Device

This supplemental device bridges the gap between concrete representations and abstract concepts of numbers. Included are 10 interchangeable vinyl number lines which have black raised lines and dots at intervals marked by both braille and large type numerals. Forty plastic cylinders serve as pegs and/or interlocking bars to help illustrate the concepts. The base measures 24 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. It will hold two number lines for comparison (e.g., tens and fourths). Instructions in regular type are included. Recommended ages: 6 years and older.

APH Number Line Device: Catalog no. 1-03480-00--$49.95

@Brannan Cubarithm Slate and Cubes

This math aid consists of a rubber frame containing a 16 x 16 grid pattern of nests which will hold small plastic cubes numbered in braille. Young students may find it easier to use this device rather than a brailler for problems such as multiplication. Frame and cubes are sold separately. Recommended ages: 6 years and older.

Rubber Frame only (Measures 8 3/4 x 9 inches): Catalog no. 1-00320-00--$13.95 Plastic Cubes only (Set of 100 plastic cubes containing the braille dot configurations for the digits 0 through 9 and the letter o on the sixth side): Catalog no. 1-00330-00--$17.95

@FOCUS in Mathematics

FOCUS in Mathematics is an activity-based program which emphasizes the fundamental operations, properties, and structures of mathematics. All of the concepts are introduced by the manipulation of objects. Operations and concepts include sorting, matching, counting, addition, subtraction, fractions, graphs, time, money, etc.

FOCUS in Mathematics is available in three versions: Academic, Deaf/Blind, and Multihandicapped. The Academic Program includes the Academic manual, along with a set of over 400 materials. These materials are designed to be easily handled and offer excellent tactile and visual contrast. Recommended ages: 4 years and older.

To receive the Academic Program, simply order the complete kit (Catalog no. 1-08280-00). To receive either the Deaf/Blind Program or the Multihandicapped Program, please order the Academic Program (complete kit) and order the appropriate additional manual.

FOCUS in Mathematics, Academic Program (complete kit--includes Academic manual): Catalog no. 1-08280-00--$269.95 NEW!--Quantity purchase discount available for the above item! Please see page 163.

@Fractional Parts of Wholes Set

This is a set of tactile circles that introduce the concepts of wholes, halves, thirds, and fourths. Contained in the set are: one work tray; three form boards with one, two, and three recesses, respectively; and four 3-inch diameter circles: one whole and one each cut into halves, thirds, and fourths. Thickness of circles is greater than that of the form board recesses for easy tactual identification. Recommended ages: 6 years and older.

Fractional Parts of Wholes Set: Catalog no. 1-03290-00--$32.95

@Geometric Forms

This aid introduces primary level students to three basic shapes: the circle, square, and triangle. Kit includes three plane figures; four solid figures; and a white, vacuum-formed plastic sheet illustrating closed curves in black, raised lines. Recommended ages: 5 years and older.

Geometric Forms: Catalog no. 1-03410-00--$27.95

@Graphic Aid for Mathematic

s This product can be used by students to construct geometric and other mathematical figures necessary for the study of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. The Graphic Aid for Mathematics consists of a cork composition board mounted with a rubber mat which has been embossed with a grid of 1/2 inch squares. The board measures 18 x 19 x 1 inches. Included are three flat spring wires, 14 push pins, and a supply of rubber bands. Figures are constructed on the board by inserting the push pins at the appropriate coordinates and connecting these points with rubber bands (for lines) or flat spring wires (for circles and arcs). Recommended ages: 8 years and older.
