Touch NOMAD Lightly: It Talks!

Put simply, NOMAD makes tactile pictures talk! NOMAD is a touch-sensitive pad on which raised-line graphics are placed. The NOMAD pad is connected to a personal computer (supplied by the user) and files describing the graphics are loaded. Once the appropriate file is selected, the user can touch various points on the graphic and NOMAD will describe them with synthetic speech.

Blind and visually impaired people can use NOMAD to independently learn about geography, geometry, biology, physics, physiology, electronics, astronomy, and any other subjects involving charts, graphs, diagrams or spatial concepts.

Some of the many uses of NOMAD include:
-- A simple and easy solution to teaching tactile graphics of all
sorts, including charts, graphs, and diagrams -- Provides a multimedia presentation of information for a
variety of special education applications -- A powerful orientation and mobility training tool
-- A talking directory for buildings and campuses
-- Talking games

Use Ready-Made Graphics or Create Your Own

-- Ready-Made Graphics from APH: These graphic packages cover a variety of subjects and come with both raised-line graphics and the appropriate software (in both IBM(R) and Macintosh(R) formats--an optional kit is required for Macintosh use). See the end of this product listing for available graphics packages.

-- Custom-Made Graphics by APH: We can use your specifications to create raised-line drawings with accompanying software. Please contact APH's Tactile Graphics Supervisor for more information. Some restrictions apply.

-- Make Your Own! You can make tactile graphics using a number of common methods and then program NOMAD yourself--it's easy! You can make tactile graphics with puff paint, Elmer's(R) Glucolor(R), a hot glue gun, drafting tape, yarn, or many other techniques. Also, please refer to our new Tactile Graphics Starter Kit, page 33.

Easy to Program

Calling up existing NOMAD files is an easy, menu-driven process requiring only basic computer skills. Programming graphic information for your own files is also quick and simple: type the information on the computer keyboard, place the graphic on the NOMAD touch board, and then press the corresponding points on the graphic; it is that easy! Once a graphic and its data file have been created, they can be used over and over again.
