Marty has been speed skating since 1989. The 2007 - 2008 season is his 20th season.
He remembers when blades were straight, boots were off the shelf, and plunger heads were used for blocks.
Equipment has come a long way since he started speed skating.
Many skaters have custom boots, blocks are a standard ISU design, and blades are bent.
Marty got his first bent blades, Zandstra's, in 1994.
Every time he would put them in a jig, he would cringe that the jig clamps were flat but the blade was bent.
This became one of his greatest pet peeves.
This pet peeve lasted for 13 years, until Marty and his good friend Jerry Whitmer invented the StayBent Sharpening Frame.
Marty's speed skating accomplishments include helping to grow the Rochester Speed Skating team from 7 members in 1998 to 65 members today
and winning the National Short Track Speed Skating Championship title for Masters Men 30-39 in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007.
Jerry started speed skating in 2006.
After a couple months of having other skaters sharpen his skates he decided to make his own sharpening frame.
He is one of the best CNC Machinists (computer pneumatically controlled machining) and CAD Designers (computer assisted drawing) around.
One month after deciding to make his own sharpening frame he walked into practice with the most precise, well built, and good looking sharpening frame ever...
BUT it still had flat clamps!
We all looked at the jig and told him how great it was, but I added that it still has the same major flaw that all other jigs have...flat clamps!
One month later Jerry completed his new sharpening frame, and the clamps swiveled to accommodate the bend in the blade!
And so began the manufacturing of the StayBent Sharpening Frame.
