Applications of Scientific Photography I

Applications of Scientific Photography I explores the approaches and techniques used in the production of photographs used in the life sciences industry. The fall quarter emphasizes the development of skills used in close-up and laboratory photography as well as photomacrography where the recording and delivery of information is the objective. Students will produce assignments that explore lighting, the optimzation of the camera as a recording device, as well as the proper selection and use of lenses and bellows used to make magnified images. The course assignments will be evaluated and based on the meeting of specific learning objectives. Special methods necessary to photograph subjects that are smaller than a grain of rice or transparent such as a contact lens will be evaluated. The course utilizes digital capture devices while exploring the role of photography when used for information gathering and deliver. Fundamentals of image processing are also discussed.
