Basic Hydraulic System

Learning Objective: This week's lab will focus on the complete hydraulic system. After doing this lab, you will be able to do these things:

  1. Set up and operate hydraulics system of figure 1.15 page 15 of text book.
  2. Identify the main components of a hydraulic system.(refer to chapter 1 of the textbook and to Figure 1.15)
  3. Identify actuators, hydraulic motors and hydraulic valves, flow control valves and check valves, and associate these with their function in the circuit.
  4. Prepare a block schematic diagram of the simple hydraulic system.
  5. Prepare a ISO symbol schematic diagram of the hydraulic system.
  6. Discuss the hydraulic systems shown in the assortment of application photos in the table below. Discuss how hydraulic elements are applied in each application and add notations to photos to point to the hydraulic elements when they are visible.
  7. Prepare a report on with photographs, of the lab experiment. This should include ISO schematic diagrams prepared using VISIO and narrative in WORD in accordance with the course's lab report format.

In the first part we will examine the hydraulic benches and their components and build up a basic hydraulic circuit. Then, time permitting, we can discuss the photo images from the table on this page.

  • NOTE-Your instructor must approve your notebook (check, correct, initial and date) prior to your leaving the lab area.

Report

Prepare a report on this lab. Your report should contain the following elements:

  • Prepare a schematic diagram of the basic hydraulic system using blocks to represent the main components and arrows to show the flow directions. Use text figure 1-15 as a model.
  • Prepare an ISO symbol schematic diagram of the complete hydraulic power system. This figure should be prepared using VISIO and be full page size for clarity. Include all the circuit elements in the system (electric driven pump, system pressure regulator, 4-way-3-position valve, check valve, flow control (needle) valve, actuator, flow meter, filter, and vented reservoir with level indicator. Show gauges attached to the supply and drain lines.(The Friday computer lab session will show you how to do this).
  • Describe each of the main hydraulic system components and their function.
  • Prepare a report on with photographs, of the lab experiment. This should include ISO schematic diagrams prepared using VISIO and narrative in WORD in accordance with the course's lab report format. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic systems.
