RIT Orchestra
Joining the RIT Orchestra
Orchestra collage

Participation in the RIT Orchestra is open to all RIT students, faculty and staff, as well as the Greater Rochester Community, by audition. Auditions are usually for seating purposes for strings, but are a bit more competitive for winds, and take place the first week of classes in the fall, as well as by appointment at other times of the year. They consist of orchestral excerpts, scales, sight reading exercises, and you may play a piece you have prepared if you wish. (It's all very painless!) If you wish to learn more about auditioning for the RIT Orchestra, or to obtain audition materials (orchestral excerpts, forms, schedule, other information), contact Dr. Michael E. Ruhling at michael.ruhling@rit.edu, or by telephone 585-475-2014.

Audition information, 2008-2009 RIT Orchestra

Auditions for the RIT Orchestra will take place during the first Monday night of the fall quarter, September 1 at 7:00 in the SAU music room. The audition will include playing some orchestral excerpts, which you can get (pdf format) by clicking your instrument below, sight-reading, and scales (major and minor keys containing up to four sharps or four flats). You may also play your own prepared piece if you wish. Please fill out and print this audition information form, and bring it to your audition. The auditions should take about 10 minutes.

If you are unable to be in the RIT Orchestra in the fall but wish to join later in the year, please notify Dr. Ruhling of your intentions, and audition arrangements will be made later in the year. I look forward to hearing all of you!
