2.0 Course Description
This course will be process-oriented with emphasis on systematic thinking, application of visual aesthetics and communication of meaning. The course will involve an analysis of visual syntax (line, color, shape, etc.) and form synthesis studies to realize a two dimensional graphic translation image.This will be followed with a three-dimensional application, poster and presentation book. Illustrated lectures will be offered on graphic design process, models from graphic design history and visual aesthetics including organization methods. Project work will be accomplished using traditional hand graphic techniques as well as electronic tools and methods. Students are expected to have basic working capability with Macintosh computer, Freehand or Illustrator and QuarkXPress. This will be extended in the digital portion of the course.

4.1 Graphic Translation Development of two dimensional image form of object
4.2 Translation and Cube
Design of three-dimensional form in which translation and typography are integrated
4.3 Poster
Design a poster in which translation, typography and imagery are utilized
4.4 Presentation Book
Development of a book in which work from the quarter is documented in
sequential pages
5.0 Evaluation
5.1 Primary evaluation is based on quality of student solutions to assigned projects.
5.1.1 Appropriateness of solution
5.1.2 Formal aesthetic quality
5.1.3 Use of media and technology
5.1.4 Meeting project requirements, due dates, etc.
5.1.5 Concept development, originality, presentation
5.2 Work will be evaluated according to these criteria
5.2.1 Syntax (visual grammar)
5.2.2 Semantics (meaning, message)
5.2.3 Pragmatics (function)
5.3 Individual growth, professional development and attitude as well as
active participation in class will be evaluated
