Much More than Mere Math (MMMM) - Sponsored by the Rochester Chapter of ASA
A forum for High School (HS) teachers who are involved with AP Statistics
or any form
of HS statistics education. This forum would be established to create a
dialog between practicing statisticians and the HS teachers to give
the HS teachers more insight into the uses of statistics in the real world.
Teaching techniques would be discussed and motivational exercises would
be presented. The idea is to make statistics fun and much more than a mere "math" course.
Career Day for Statistics
The National Organization of ASA has set aside grant money to help
finance career day activities sponsored by local chapters. The
Rochester Chapter
would sponsor such a day in mid spring for Senior and Junior High School
students. The contacts made in the MMMM forum would help publicize
this activity.
Statistical Consulting
We have invited Janice Derr, author of the book on statistical
consulting to speak at a Rochester Chapter evening meeting. This
is a great opportunity for local members who have found themselves
cut off from their jobs
at large companies
or those who are still fortunate to be employed to sharpen their
consulting skills.
Rochester Chapter Elects New Officers
At the December meeting of the Rochester Chapter of ASA a new slate of officers was elected for the 2004 year. Peter Bajorski moves from Treasurer to President. Thomas Barker takes over the duties of Vice President and Program Chair. Steve LaLonde becomes the new Treasurer.
