Calculating Areas

Practice Shapes

Calculate the area of each of the shapes below. Make the measurements that you need.

1. Square

Formula: A = L 2

Calculation: = (6.3 cm) 2

Answer: 36.96 cm2
Let's round this off to 40. cm2

2. Rectangle

Formula: A = L x W

Calculation: A = (8.6 cm) x (5.0 cm)

Answer: 43 cm2

3. Circle

Formula: A = p r2

Calculation: A = p (3.4 cm)2

Answer: A = 36.3 cm2

4. Triangle

Formula: A = (1/2) b x h

Calculation: A = (1/2) (8.0 cm) (6.9 cm)

Answer: A = 27.6 cm2

5. Regular Polygon #1 (Hexagon)

Formula: A = (1/2) P x r
["P" is for the perimeter of the figure; that is the (# of sides) x (length of one side)
"r" is the radius of the figure; that is the distance from the center of the figure to the mid-point of any side.]

Calculation: A = (1/2) (6) (5.2 cm) (4.3 cm)

Answer: A = 67 cm2

6. Regular Polygon #2 (Nonagon)

Formula: A = (1/2) P x r
["P" is for the perimeter of the figure; that is the (# of sides) x (length of one side)
"r" is the radius of the figure; that is the distance from the center of the figure to the mid-point of any side.]

Calculation: A = (1/2) (9) (4.1 cm) (5.6 cm)

Answer: A = 103 cm2
